Marriage

Ep. 59 | Effective Teamwork in Marriage with Andrew Van Kirk

Being married and having a partner to go through life with is a huge gift and blessing. It means you have the opportunity to be and do more together than you could apart. But it takes work and intentionality to become an effective team!

In this episode I’m joined again by my husband Andrew to break down the six keys to being an effective team with your spouse and what this looks like practically in everyday life.

Highlights From This Episode

  • “Change is inevitable. Growth is intentional.” - Glenda Cloud

  • Our efforts in life are always more effective when working together with other people toward the same aim

  • The Bible is full of wisdom and instructions to help us work effectively together for the glory of God

  • Clear, open, honest, and respectful communication is foundational to working well as a team

  • When you have a clear understanding of your aim, priorities, goals, roles, and a clear plan for making everything happen, you can thrive as teammates and support each other well along the way

  • Being a supportive spouse looks like doing whatever you can to help your partner be successful in fulfilling their purpose and roles

  • Having fun and enjoying life together will draw you closer and make you more effective

  • We’re called as followers of Christ to adopt the attitude and mindset of Christ, so to be an effective team by God’s grace, for God’s glory, we have to show up with the attitude of Christ.

  • Taking the time to learn and know each other will help you work better together

  • Carving out the time and space to connect and communicate will require saying no to something else

  • If something matters to you, you’ll find a way…if it doesn’t, you’ll find an excuse.

Scripture From This Episode

  • Mark 10:6-9 “But God made them male and female from the beginning of creation. This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

  • Mark 6:7 “Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.”

  • Luke 11:17 "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall."

  • Philippians 2:2-4 "Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”

  • 1 Peter 3:8 “Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.”

  • Colossians 3:14 “Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
